Music Emphasis Index
Here you will find general information, class requirements, and sample four year plans for each concentration that Vanguard's Department of Music offers.
Composition
The Music Composition emphasis provides an alternative for students who want to pursue careers in music that are geared toward composing and/or scoring rather than performing. Students may apply for admission to the Composition Emphasis during their second semester of study in music theory (MUSC 136). Six consecutive semesters of private lessons in composition and a Senior Recital are required for this emphasis.
Education
Whether the plan is to lead elementary school ensembles or to teach at the university level, concentrating on Music Education is perfect for students who want to become music teachers. Students who plan to apply for teaching credentials should consult with the Dean of the School of Education for procedures and requirements for admission to the teacher training program.
Ministry
A Music Ministry emphasis is for those that feel called to use their talents in a church setting. Students who plan to apply for ministerial credentials should consult with the chair of the Department of Church Ministries for pertinent information and the necessary application forms.
Performance
The Performance Emphasis caters to students who desire to become professional, classically-trained performers. Students may apply for admission to the Performance Emphasis during their second semester of applied music instruction. In this emphasis, eight consecutive semesters of study in one performance medium are required. (Two consecutive semesters at 30-minute and six semesters at 60-minute lessons.)
