Sending Pictures for placement on the Website

Please use the following guidelines when sending pictures. The formats are listed in order of preference:

  1. A CD-ROM of pictures that has been processed by a photo processing company from your roll of film. Please send labeled hard copy photos with the CD, unless other arrangements have been made in advance.

  2. Pictures already in digital format (this format is the most preferred if you are a professional photographer sending pictures). Preferred file format is PNG, then TIFF, and finally JPG or GIF. Please save all files in PC format if you use a Mac. JPEG files lose resolution every time they are retouched, and may not yield the results you are looking for. All pictures should be uncompressed and at full resolution. Please provide some form of text with the pictures for captioning purposes if appropriate.

  3. Hard copy pictures. Please label each one.

Some tips on shooting pictures for the Internet:

  • For portrait shots, have the subject stand off of a neutral colored wall at about 3-4 feet to avoid shadows. Use landscape orientation for the picture instead of portrait (wider horizontally rather than vertically). Use a flash inside and out if possible, to minimize facial shadow. Take a close-up; get the head and shoulders in, but not much more, unless you're trying to get a picture of the upper body clothing as well.

  • Crowd shots don't work for the little picture sizes we can use on the web site. Group shots rarely work unless they are of a group that is close (within a few feet). The exception would be when you would have a photo album that is exclusively pictures and some explanatory text, like we do for graduation, and in that case the pictures can be made a little larger than usual.

  • Try for a human interest picture by concentrating on faces or close-up actions, and if it's a sports picture, zoom in as close as you can to the player(s) and the ball (try to get the ball in the picture).
