Bob Wilson Athletic Director 2009

Robert Wilson, M.A. - Director of Athletics - NAIA MBB Hall of Fame Class of 2006-07

Bob came to Vanguard University in the fall of 1995 and begins his fifteenth year directing Vanguard’s athletic department. Guiding the Lions through the process of adding a men’s and women's swimming program during the past school year, Wilson’s 15th year will be marked by propelling Vanguard University into a 15-sport Athletic Department. Wilson is deeply committed to making a significant impact on students and athletes at Vanguard, using the platform of athletics to teach about pursuing excellence in academics, athletics, and character building.

Wilson, an Academic All-American athlete, was a starting point guard and helped lead his basketball team to the NCAA National Tournament while at University of Wyoming. Retiring from coaching after the 2005-06 season, he finished his third complete season in charge of the men’s basketball Lions to return to his full-time Athletic Director duties. Wilson coached basketball at the collegiate level for more than 24 years and previously was the Athletic Director at Phillips University for 10 years. He retired with an overall record of 385-357, and was inducted into the NAIA Men’s Basketball Hall of Fame in March of 2007 (Class of 2006-07).

Bob has served the NAIA in a number of capacities, including President of the Basketball Coaches Association, men’s basketball rater, and Chairman of the NAIA Basketball Tournament. Wilson serves on the Council of Athletic Administrators, and is the past President of the Athletic Directors Association. Bob is also the Vice President of the Golden State Athletic Conference and a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. On June 17, 2002, Mr. Wilson was selected the NAIA Athletics Director of the Year for the West coast by NACDA.

Wilson was certified by the NAIA as a Champions of Character Instructor in December 2004 and is the Director of Vanguard’s NAIA Champions of Character Program Center, in its fifth year of existence. He spends a great deal of time speaking in the community about changing the culture of sport and has created Vanguard’s University’s Gold Pride program to personalize and conceptualize the Champions of Character initiative on the VU campus. He also created the content for and teaches a Character Class offered to all new Vanguard student-athletes, now in its third year of existence.

Beth Renkoski Associate Athletic Director 2009-10

Beth Renkoski, B.S. - Associate Athletic Director/Sports Information Director

Beth returns for her seventh year as Associate Athletic Director and fifteenth year in charge of Sports Information at Vanguard University. In addition, she begins her fourteenth season as the head softball coach for the Lions. Beth works directly with student-athletes and coaches at Vanguard to provide information on Lion Athletics to the local media, opponents, opponents' media, Vanguard's website, and all outside Vanguard affiliates such as the NAIA, the GSAC, and other associations. Beth is involved in the production of press releases, game programs, photography, statistics, conference reports, and other publications for all 15 sports, as well as producing and updating the athletic pages of the Vanguard website.

Beth became a certified instructor for the NAIA’s Champions of Character (COC) initiative in June of 2005 and serves VU’s COC Program Center as the Media Director and presenter. Renkoski earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business at Nicholls State University in 1987 while playing softball for the Colonels. She came to Vanguard as an assistant softball coach in 1991 before adding part-time Sports Information Director duties in the fall of 2005.

Nolan Steputis Associate Athletic Director 2009-10

Nolan V. Steputis, B.S. - Associate Athletic Director

Nolan joined the Vanguard athletic staff the fall of 2007 and begins his third year as an Associate Athletic Director. Steputis supervises game management for all home games, matches, or meets, is in charge of contracts for all home athletic events, and oversees the VU Intramural Athletic Program. In addition, Steputis coordinates the academic progress reports of student-athletes, works with processing eligibility paperwork, assists with media relations as needed, as well as works with the director of athletics in other departmental tasks such as scheduling and contracting for athletic facilities.

Prior to taking the AAD position he was the Men’s Basketball Director of Operations and served as Vanguard’s Men’s Basketball Team Manager. Filling roles such as Athletic Department Intern and Assistant Director of Intramurals, Steputis also trained for his current position with four years as a student worker in athletics for the previous Associate Athletic Director Jimmy Dent.

Steputis attended the NAIA’s Champions of Character instructor training session last summer and is in the process of becoming a Certified Instructor within VU’s Champions of Character Program Center.

A native of Oregon, Steputis graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Sports Science from Vanguard in 2006 and completed VU’s Preliminary Single Subject Credential Program in Physical Education by the spring of 2007. Steputis is currently pursuing a master of science degree in Sports Management from the United States Sports Academy. Focused and motivated on his athletic administrative career, Steputis is excited to continue the Gold Pride Traditions and to push Vanguard Athletics in the right direction.

Dr. Terry Zeigler ATEP Director 2009-10

Dr. Terry Zeigler, Ed.D., ATC - Athletic Training Education Program Director

Terry has served Vanguard in numerous capacities including Assistant Athletic Trainer, Head Athletic Trainer, Head Softball Coach, Interim Athletic Director, and Assistant Athletic Director during the 24 years she has been a VU employee. Currently Zeigler is the Athletic Training Education Program Director (ATEPD), a full-time professor in the Kinesiology Department, and provides treatment to VU student-athletes as an active Certified Athletic Trainer on a limited basis.

Dr. Zeigler directed Vanguard’s lengthy process with the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, helping VU’s Athletic Training Program become fully accredited in July of 2001, and continually has to make sure that VU’s ATEP program meets the accreditation standards. As an Approved Clinical Instructor, Dr. Zeigler helps athletic training students master clinical proficiencies within the Athletic Training Education Program. Terry is also a member of the Athletic Committee that meets to make important athletic departmental decisions.

Also an alumni of VUSC (then Southern California College), Zeigler attained her master’s degree at San Diego State University and her doctorate degree from Florida’s Nova Southeastern University.

Darin Voigt Head Athletic Trainer 2009-10

Darin Voigt, M.S., ATC- Head Athletic Trainer

Darin became Vanguard’s Head Athletic Trainer (HAT) during the summer of 2005 and is beginning his fifth year within Vanguard’s Athletic Department. Voigt, who became certified as an Athletic Trainer in 1995, also holds CPR and Emergency Care Certification with the American Heart Association. He oversees all areas of the Athletic Training Room in the preventative and post-injury care of all Lion athletics participants as well as insurance and other medical needs of the athletes. Twice a year Voigt arranges pre-participation physical exams for all VU student athletes. As a part of VU’s athletic staff, Voigt is a trained member of VU’s Champions of Character Program Center.

Darin has one full-time assistant, a pair of Athletic Training Interns, the ATEPD, and several athletic training students who work in the department to staff the training room, cover practices, and work all home athletic events. In addition to his duties as VU’s head athletic trainer, Voigt is an adjunct professor in the Kinesiology department and, as an Approved Clinical Instructor, will help athletic training students master clinical proficiencies within the Athletic Training Education Program.

Darin received a Bachelor of Science degree at Cal Poly Pomona in Physical Education with an emphasis in Athletic Training and Kinesiology. Following his work at CPP, Voigt attained a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sports Medicine from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Voigt, who has been involved in the field of athletic training or physical therapy since 1993, was honored with Orange County’s Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award in 1999. He came to Vanguard from a Physical Therapy Clinic in the state of Washington.

Alise Juanes Assistant Athletic Trainer 2009-10

Alise Juanes, M.A., ATC, - Assistant Athletic Trainer

Alise joined the Vanguard University Athletic Staff during the summer of 2006 as an Assistant Athletic Trainer and begins her fourth year as a full-time employee at Vanguard. Alise assists the head athletic trainer in all areas of the daily operations of the athletic training department, including supervising and instructing athletic training students as they get hands on experience in caring for athletic injuries. In addition to AAT duties, she is an adjunct professor in the Kinesiology Department and, as an Approved Clinical Instructor, will help athletic training students master clinical proficiencies within the Athletic Training Education Program of the ATP. Mrs. Juanes has been trained in the NAIA’s Champions of Character Program and is engaged in VU’s Program Center.

Juanes graduated from VUSC in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training. Named VUSC’s Outstanding Exercise and Sports Science Major of the year as a senior, Juanes was also chosen the Athletic Training Student of the Year in 2003 and 2004. In addition, the NAIA Scholar-Athlete played two seasons on the women’s soccer team at Vanguard and was named VUSC’s Female Co-Champion of Character as a senior defender in 2003. Juanes (then Alise McBrien) continued her education at San Jose State University where she completed a Master of Arts degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training. During her two-year stint at SJSU, she was responsible for the care of athletes from 26 sports as the Head Athletic Trainer for Gunn High School. Juanes is also a CPR Instructor and has experience as a Physical Therapy Aid.

Diane Ortiz Administrative Assistant 2009-10

Diane Ortiz - Administrative Assistant

Diane has worked in the athletic department at Vanguard University for 26 years. For the third consecutive year Ortiz will work a part-time schedule as she continues to carry a crucial load for the athletic team. She reports directly to the director of athletics and serves as the office manager for the athletic department. Ortiz is responsible for the eligibility process and certification for all student-athletes at VU, as well as assists the athletics director with the department’s budget control, analysis, and fiscal management. In addition, she processes the coaches’ payroll and all invoices, bills, team travel, and check requests related to athletics. Without naming all duties, it is safe to say that the athletics department would not run without Diane’s work and her years of experience and expertise.

Brian Roberts Assistant Sports Information 2009-10

Brian Roberts - Assistant Sports Information

Brian begins a new assignment this fall for Vanguard University, taking on a part-time role as an assistant in the Sports Information Department. A 2008 graduate of Vanguard University, Roberts will use his Communications degree, sports journalism experience, and passion for athletic competition to take on additional duties for Vanguard athletics. He will be assisting the Sports Information Director in all facets of the department, including writing releases, updating the web site, and statistical input as needed.

Roberts, a four-year player and NAIA Scholar-Athlete on Vanguard’s Men’s Basketball team as an undergraduate, became an Assistant Coach for Vanguard’s highly successful Women’s Basketball program last fall. Those duties will continue as he begins his newest position for the Lions. A quality addition to the team, Roberts was named VU’s Male Champion of Character as a senior in 2008 and will be a valuable asset as a staff member.

Levi Seekins - Director of Intramurals

Levi Seekins - Director of Intramurals

Levi returns to his alma mater to begin part-time duties as the Director of Vanguard University’s Intramural Sports Program. Seekins, VU's 2006 Male Athlete of the Year and Champions of Character Award winner, will be directing a staff of student workers to run Intramural Sports programs such as flag football, basketball, volleyball, softball, and others, for the student population at Vanguard University. As a part of the Intramural Program, Seekins will also organize weight room usage and open gym time for Vanguard students, while reporting to the Associate Athletics Director.

Seekins, a former All-GSAC and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention basketball player for the Lions, will also serve as an assistant coach in the men’s basketball program, including taking charge of the newly added junior varsity men’s basketball team. He will organize and direct all activities concerning the JV program at Vanguard.
