Defense Dominates

Costa Mesa, Calif. – Coming off a 2-0 upset of The Master’s College on Saturday, the Vanguard Lions were hoping to keep moving in the right direction with their fourth GSAC victory of the season. However, the Point Loma Sea Lions matched up for an intense battle with the Lions, holding on for a 0-0 double overtime tie, despite playing the final 42 minutes with one less player on the field.

The teams combined for only five shots in the first half as the defenses came out strong for both teams. Two of VU’s four shots were on goal, but Eric Leboffe made both stops for the Sea Lions to send the game into halftime in a scoreless tie.

Vanguard out-shot the visitors 8-4 in the second half with Leboffe turning away both shots on goal again. VU’s Trevor Herrera also collected a pair of saves in the period as the zeroes remained on the scoreboard for both teams through the first 90 minutes of play. PLNU, who lost a player with a red card in the 68th minute of the game stepped up on defense to stay in the game as the teams entered the sudden death overtime.

Twenty minutes of overtime play still revealed no winner as each team had their chances at close range goals. However, the defense prevailed in each scramble for the ball and time ran out, producing a double shutout in the end.

Leboffe tallied five saves for the Sea Lions and Herrera needed just the two second-half saves as both goalies notched a shutout in the process.

PLNU slides to 3-9-1 overall and 2-5-1 in GSAC while the Lions, who out-shot the visitors 16-5 in the game, move to 6-5-3 overall and 3-2-2 in GSAC.

The Vanguard men hit the road this weekend with their next GSAC game at Fresno Pacific on Saturday.
