Costa Mesa, Calif. - Celebrating senior night on the last regular season game of the year, the visiting Westmont Warriors put a damper on Vanguard’s celebration by defeating the Lions 4-0. The shutout lifted the Warriors to fifth place in the final GSAC standings and dropped the Lions into the sixth position. Regardless of tonight’s outcome, both teams will continue the season next week in the first round of the GSAC Postseason Tournament.

The Warriors scored early in both periods, taking a 1-0 lead in the tenth minute of the game on a goal by Doug Harrell. Harrell’s goal came after Hugo Pizano’s shot ricocheted off the crossbar and Harrell won the rebound out around the 18-yard mark.

Westmont doubled its lead at the 27-minute mark when Pizano, assisted by Dan Sargent and Isaac Thompkins, found the net from about 18 yards out.

The Lions took five first-half shots, all off target, and entered the halftime break trailing only 2-0 thanks to a pair of saves by VU's junior keeper Trevor Herrera.

Pizano struck again less than five minutes into the second period, scoring on an 18-yard volley from the right side to stretch the Warriors’ lead to 3-0. Westmont’s final goal put the game out of reach for the Lions as Harrell headed in a corner kick from Harrison Hill.

With only 25 minutes to play, the four-goal lead was too much for the Lions to overcome and the Warriors held on for the shutout with VU’s final three shots missing either high or wide.

Westmont’s Matthew McNab did not record a save but notched the shutout and the victory in goal as the Warriors improved to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in GSAC. Finishing in fifth place, the Warriors will play the fourth seeded team on the road in the first round of the GSAC playoffs next Wednesday.

Herrera had three saves for Vanguard, but the Lions fall to 7-7-3 overall and 4-4-2 in GSAC. Despite playing their final game at Vanguard, seniors Ryan Marquez and Eric Nutter will extend their collegiate soccer careers at least for a game. Tied for sixth place in GSAC, the Lions hold the head to head tiebreaker over Fresno Pacific and will travel to No. 3 seeded Biola next Wednesday for the first round of the GSAC Postseason Tournament.

Complete tournament matchups and times will be posted on the GSAC website as soon as they are available.
