No. 6 Lions Draw Tie with Eagles

La Mirada, Calif--- It was another long night for the Vanguard Lions who played into double overtime for the fourth time in the last five games. Slipping from fifth to sixth in today’s NAIA women’s soccer poll, the Lions battled the Biola Eagles for 110 minutes, only to come away with 1-1 tie, VU’s third tie of the season.

Combining for ten shots in the first half, neither offense could break through the defense and both goal keepers, VU’s Jill Foss and Bu’s Erin Frushon, registered a pair of saves to preserve the scoreless tie as the teams headed into the halftime break.

The first 29 minutes of the second half were scoreless as well with Foss coming up with a couple of big saves and Frushon collecting one of her own. However, the Eagles’ perseverance paid off at the 74:23 mark when Kahlie Reinecke took a Sam David pass and turned it into a 1-0 Biola lead. Feeling the urgency, the Lions responded with the game-tying goal just five minute later. Earning a corner kick, the Lions sent freshman Amanda Couch to corner flag to set the play in motion. Couch’s ball curved in through the defense and by Frushon to knot the score 1-1 with 20:16 left in regulation.

Vanguard had a pair of shots in the first overtime period, with one hitting the crossbar in the 96th minute of play, but the Lions could not find the net. Two more shots in the second OT were off mark for the Lions and the Eagles did not get a shot off after the end of regulation.

The tie moves Biola to an overall record of 6-6-2 and a conference mark of 2-6-1, while the Lions end the night 11-1-3 overall and 5-1-3 with only one regular season game remaining on the schedule.

Sixth-ranked Vanguard will celebrate senior night prior to the Lions’ last regular season home game on Saturday. Game time against the Westmont Warriors is set for 3:00 p.m. in Costa Mesa.

Thanks for supporting the Vanguard Lions.
