Lions Can't Break Stalemate With Warriors
 VU Seniors Steffes, Foss, Mauck
|
Costa Mesa, Calif--- Double overtime has become an everyday occurrence for the Vanguard Lions, who have pushed games past the 100-minute mark for the fifth time in the last six games. Today’s scoreless stalemate with the Westmont Warriors landed the Lions in a tie for the third game in a row, putting a damper on senior day in Costa Mesa.
The Lions out-shot Westmont 9-0 in the first 45 minutes of play, but three saves by Warrior keeper Roxanne Love held the Lions scoreless heading into halftime. VU’s senior goalie Jill Foss did not have to make a save until the second period when she turned away two Warrior shots on goal to maintain a zero on the visitor’s side of the scoreboard. However, Love racked up four more second-half saves out of eight total Vanguard shots, and the game headed into overtime.
The late afternoon shadows covered the majority of the field as the teams battled through the first ten-minute overtime frame. Westmont managed the only shot early in the period, but Jameisha Washington’s attempt was wide of the Vanguard goal.
The second overtime proved frustrating as well with the Lions rattling off a pair of shots to no avail. Love made one game-saving stop for the Warriors, grabbing a Gabby Valles shot, while Foss also registered a save against another attempt by Washington.
The clock ran down to zero as both fatigued teams scrambled for a goal but could not penetrate the net. Westmont moves to 6-7-2 overall and will end the GSAC season 4-5-1, while the Lions end the regular season 11-1-4 overall and 5-1-4 in GSAC.
Although the Lions celebrated senior day, recognizing Heather Mauck, Stephanie Steffes, and Foss prior to the game, the senior trio will get to play at least one more game on their home field as the Lions will host a first-round playoff game on Tuesday afternoon. The Lions, who dropped from second to third place in the GSAC standings with today’s tie, will host Concordia on Tuesday.
A complete GSAC Tournament schedule will be posted on the GSAC website as soon as it is available. Go Lions!
