As a high school student from Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, Paige Murray was determined to go a different direction than her parents, both of whom had attended VU when it was still called Southern California College. All this changed when Paige decided to go to a Pre-VU event. “I stayed in a dorm room, got to know rad people, and sang worship and played football on the beach,” Paige says. “That weekend I knew where I was going to spend the next four years of my life. I had no doubt.”
From the beginning, Paige noticed a difference at VU. Speaking of her freshman year, Paige recalls, “On my first day of classes freshman year, one of my professors suggested starting the class with prayer. Immediately, I was worried. I grew up in public schools where creation was taught only as a theory, if you were lucky… I thought for sure the principal was going to come in and ask for a moment in the hall.” To Paige’s surprise and delight, “no principal came and the praying continued every day.” She was excited to be learning about the Bible in class and found that the “little question marks I wrote in the margin of my Bible are now overlapped by explanations from my Old Testament Survey class.”
In her free time, Paige has been involved in many diverse activities. These include
Entouräge and homeless outreach. Entouräge is the well-known group of Vanguard ladies who have hearts for Youth Ministry. These zany women do everything from comedy skits to washing dishes in the name of the Lord. Paige was also in charge of publicity for the
SFO team, which strives “to make the struggling of San Francisco feel God’s love.” In addition, Paige enjoys the annual VU event called
City Serve, which sends out large groups of students on a designated weekend to help the community around Costa Mesa.
When Paige is asked what some of her favorite things are about VU and the community surrounding it, she is quick to answer. “Filling car after car of people to head down and spend every bit of sunlight playing volleyball, burying people in the sand, and attempting to skim board.” In regards to the distance from her home state, “Vanguard has become my family away from home, it is a group of people that creates the most beautiful community. The kind of community that I miss when I go back to Idaho.”
